Jamie, 36, of Los Angeles, weighed more than 250 pounds at the start of the pandemic. Here, share with Hello Men as he lost over 90 pounds through a self-taught nutrition regimen, he got into the best shape of his life with the help of his coach at Ultimate Performance and is setting new fitness goals for 2022 .
I started transforming my body about two and a half years ago. One day I decided that I had had enough and wanted to completely re-evaluate my priorities. I set out to learn about health and nutrition, which was an amazing experience; it was as if a whole world had opened up to me. I went through all the information I could, watched all the YouTube videos, found all the Subreddit, and during my first week on a low carb diet I lost 11 pounds. This initial progress completely hooked me.
Personally, I never felt like I had a particularly bad relationship with food, I just had it zero knowledge of nutrition or really any cure. So I started doing it ceto, feeding me real food and I noticed changes immediately. I lost 95 pounds that way. Then, after continuing Ultimate Performance LA on social media for a year, I decided to step in and try one of their transformations for myself.
The most important change was learning how to keep track of my calories. I never needed to keep track of my calories when I was doing keto, because my diet just worked. I ate until I was full, and then I didn’t eat until I was hungry again. When I started with my coach Julian, I realized that I should learn to keep track of my food. The food in general did not change much. I already ate in a pretty healthy way and now I cook for myself for every meal. I also started slowly incorporating some carbs into my diet. I still prefer to eat generally lower in carbs, but they are certainly not the enemy as they used to be for me.
Now I use whey protein a lot more than before, and I also use it for cooking. Some of my favorites are protein ice cream and protein brownies in the microwave. They are not quite as good as the real ones, but they are close enough that you can satisfy your sweets. My meals usually include a large source of protein and then any leftover vegetables in the fridge. I switch between chicken, beef, turkey, salmon, tilapia and then as many vegetables as I want. Healthy eating does not have to be boring!
I work in the management of artists in the music industry, where there are many social events with a wide range of snacks and alcohol (which is what contributed to my weight gain in the first place). Fortunately, much of my transformation took place during the pandemic, so I didn’t really have much to lose. It’s definitely been a few days since I started tracking my calories that I’ve expended and gone overboard, but I’ve always been able to get back on track the next day, and it doesn’t seem to have slowed my progress. .
Before my initial weight loss I had done absolutely no resistance training, and before I started UP I thought I had already finished my journey! In my head I was now a thin person, having dropped from 255 pounds to 160 pounds. Normal clothes fit me well, and I figured it could basically cost. The reality was obviously very different knowing what I know now. He had 25 years of perfect body fat, absolutely zero muscle definition. The job had become a bit unfamiliar for a while due to the pandemic, and I’m a pretty goal-oriented guy, so building strength and muscle gave me something to focus on.
I went from literally never training to say yes to any opportunity that allowed me to move my body. I spent a few months as a member of a CrossFit box that I loved, I started trail running with a friend who was patient with me and loved it, I played squash regularly with friends and recently m ‘I’ve gotten really into bouldering. I also live in LA and there are some absolutely amazing excursions on my doorstep. It’s easy to find time to be outside.
When it came to training with UP, my whole upper body struggled! I remember finding the dumbbell press especially difficult because I didn’t even know the right way to put the dumbbell over my head and go down safely again. Julian has literally helped me every step of the way and saved my face more than a couple of times from falling dumbbells. I really enjoyed working with my form there and seeing how the numbers of the weights increase quite regularly.
Julian is all about details and makes sure we make the most of our time in the gym. When there were movements that made me a little sore, the schedule changed and that allowed me to continue. It keeps things fun and interesting and I can say it’s really exciting for me when I get to a new PR or do a great workout.
I lost about 20 pounds in my first 12 weeks at UP. But most importantly, I went from 25 percent body fat to 10.8 percent. Once I reached my 10 percent goal, I worked with Julian on some new muscle building goals, increased my calories, and now I’m sitting a little taller than my thinner with 148 pounds and probably a 12 for one hundred body fat.
One of the things I regret is that I didn’t get a blood test when I was in my healthiest condition, so I’m having a hard time quantifying how much healthier I am now from the point of view of blood, but reducing body fat will definitely be possible. I have taken a lot of stress out of my organs. Also, I have more energy, I feel safer and my wife says that even my posture has changed, and these days I walk straighter.
My goal for 2022 now is consistency. I’m not focused on scale, and I don’t really have any performance goals, but I would love to remain the healthiest person I can be. I love that my gym routine has become a constant in my life, the results are gradual and I am excited to see how far this journey takes me. I recently had my first child and finally I just want to live as long as possible to spend time with him!
If you want to improve your fitness but don’t know where to start, my advice is to find something you like. If you come from a sedentary lifestyle, doing anything with your body will be a big step forward, and finding something that excites you to do regularly makes it very easy. I think the only way to get results is to really prioritize. Set achievable goals and be as driven as possible. Say yes to every opportunity to move your body.
