The trend on the “Kids on keto” diet is causing controversy in TikTok

For Abby Durlewanger, putting her children on a low-carb, low-sugar ketogenic diet was as easy as taking candy to a baby.

“My kids are happy and healthy, and they love the keto lifestyle we lead,” says the mother of two and food influencer. House of Keto to TikTok, he told The Post. “They are not deprived of junk food, but have the power to make better food decisions.”

Three years ago, motivated by the desire to keep his children healthy, Durlewanger, 32, stopped buying donuts and mac ‘n’ cheese in the microwave. He moved his entire home to a keto lifestyle – a diet that promotes eating lean proteins like turkey and high-fat foods, including dairy and nuts.

Now, viral videos of the keto meals she prepares for her 11-year-old daughter Penelope and her 5-year-old son Huxley, such as chicken lettuce wraps, a mixture of berries and slices of fresh cheese, have accumulated more than 8.9 million views on TikTok.

Publications of her family dogs partying with low-carb homemade dishes have also proven to be popular.

But not everyone agrees that keto, a diet that Durlewanger critics have compared to “child abuse,” is appropriate for children.

Durlewanger’s posts have sparked outrage on social media as she and her husband Mike have been attacked for death threats, along with vows to call child protection services.

“I get at least 100 messages a day from people telling me to kill myself for the way I feed my family,” he said, noting that his nutritional practices have been approved by his pediatrician.

On average, U.S. children consume more than 65 pounds of sugar a year, according to the American Heart Association. A diet full of sugar and starch-filled snacks such as soft drinks, chips and cookies can increase the risk of childhood obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.

That’s why Durlewanger said he’s doing the right thing. “If my kids decide to grow up and become sugar addicts, that’s fine,” the Maryland mother said. “But for the 18 years I’ve been responsible for their diet, I don’t serve harmful foods.”

Courtney Glick, a pediatric dietitian at NYU Langone, told The Post that subjecting children to a restrictive diet such as keto can have adverse effects on the physical and psychological well-being of a growing child.

“We don’t usually suggest any children’s diets because dietary restrictions can create messy eating patterns,” Glick said. “And when adults label food as ‘bad,’ ‘wrong,’ or ‘out of bounds,’ children can be more anxious and stressed about eating, which can lead to childhood eating disorders.”

As for nutritional risks, keto for children, depending on dietary restriction, can also drastically limit the intake of B vitamins, fiber and iron, Glick added.

“The foods most children eat such as breads, pastas and cereals are fortified with vitamins and iron to promote a child’s overall health,” he said. “Eliminating carbohydrates and their micronutrients from a child’s diet is the restriction of an entire food group, which is by no means nutritionally balanced.”

Glick suggests that children follow a well-balanced diet that incorporates all food groups in order to develop positive lifelong relationships with food.

But Durlewanger argues that his children are not private. He said they even get to enjoy their favorite relentless delights from time to time.

“The goal is not to prevent them from eating pizza with the crust from time to time or a slice of cake at a friend’s birthday party,” Durlewanger said. “They do.”

“It’s not even about losing weight,” the lifestyle blogger continued. Although her children have never fought obesity, she has maintained one Weight loss of 130 kilos to the keto diet since 2016.
