The new outdoor fitness space at the UREC is open. It is two thousand five hundred square feet of whatever you can think of to meet your fitness needs.
Associate Director of Facility Operations Brad Wilson said, “We have medicine balls, battle ropes, grip strength pieces, plyo boxes for jumps. A lot of the equipment you see inside, we’ve hardened it and brought it out here for an outdoor environment.”
Students, no need to worry. Your busy schedules won’t stop you from enjoying the outdoor fitness space. The outdoor space will hold additional classes that students can join.
Wilson said, “The times are on our website. They can come out and participate in those classes at a variety of times whether it’s morning, afternoon or evening. just as equally as you would have access to the main indoor part of the building, you’ll have that same equal access out here.”
He expressed how this fitness space is only the second one in the nation. As a team, they had to look at the space and student’s needs to find the right components to put this together.
“Data by the Harvard School of Public Health Study of College Health Behaviors concluded that frequent physical activity had significant effects on students’ mood, stress levels, and social interactions. Students who were social and exercised three or more times per week reported somewhat better moods and decreased amounts of stress than those who did not.”
Business major Ben Davidson goes to the gym regularly, “I always usually feel pretty good after a workout but this adds a whole other dynamic to it being outside in the weather like this.”
Student Government played a huge role in the outdoor fitness space. They have been huge supporters of the UREC and student endeavors.
