7 Indian spices that can help in weight loss, according to the experts

“Nigella seeds are very beneficial when it comes to weight loss as they contain active compounds called phytochemicals, including phytosterols, which help in getting rid of fats. Black cumin also has the ability to control appetite, which eventually helps in reducing weight,” remarks Dietitian Vidhi Chawla. According to studies, in addition to weight loss, nigella seeds also help lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation and aid blood sugar regulation.

5. Turmeric

A popular spice in Indian cuisine—Turmeric has been part of Ayurveda for thousands of years. Turmeric comprises curcumin, a compound, which has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, turmeric plays a role in weight loss. “Turmeric can suppress fat tissue growth. It also regulates blood sugar, boosts metabolism and improves digestive enzymes. Moreover, it increases bile production in the stomach. Bile juice helps in emulsification of fat and fat metabolism,” remarks Krishnamayi Tomar, a plant-based nutritionist.

6. Fenugreek

A number of studies have found that fenugreek helps control appetite. “Fenugreek can be used as a herb or a spice. Fenugreek seeds consist of fibre, most of which is insoluble. However, they also contain a water-soluble fibre, known as galactomannan. Due to the fibre content present, fenugreek has a lot of health benefits, such as regulation of blood sugar and certain levels of appetite control. It is instrumental in improving insulin activity, which is important in facilitating weight loss. Additionally, fenugreek slows the stomach emptying and delays carb and fat absorption. This causes a reduction in appetite, which results in consumption of fewer calories and aids weight loss,” adds Prateek Kumar, fitness expert and founder of FitCru.

“Fenugreek is considered a healthy Indian spice. The best way to consume fenugreek is by soaking the seeds in a glass of water overnight and drinking the water after straining the seeds the next morning. Moreover, drinking hot tea brewed with fenugreek seeds right in the morning accelerates the rate of metabolism and can help in shedding excessive weight. Fenugreek seeds may help in tackling insulin resistance as well,” remarks Dr Archana Batra, nutritionist and certified diabetes educator.

7. Fennel

“Indian spices help with building immunity, boosting energy levels and strengthening the digestive health. In particular, drinking fennel water acts as a natural diuretic, helping one lose weight. It also helps reduce water retention in the body and aids digestion,” concludes Pooja Rajpal, dietitian and founder of 62 Vegan Street.
